Brussels Girl Geek Dinner

October 18th, 2007

geeky chix logoFirst Brussels Girl Geek Dinners last night, organized by Clo.

I was expecting something like the female version of the (gender-free but mostly male) GeekDinners i’ve already been to: high octane geeks talking implementation grit over a meal.

Nothing was farther from the truth – in fact Clo had managed to pull together a flamboyant mix of

  • web designers
  • social media consultants
  • entrepreneurs
  • artists and DJs
  • marketing
  • not to mention extensive media coverage
  • … and a few under ‘other IT’ (more conventional geekdom)

The male ornaments were mostly influential bloggers.

At first i was a bit surprised by this – i came hoping to meet kindred spirits – but then i realized this is not a bad thing. It means that the technology-oriented women of this country, instead of obsessing about implementation details, go for the bigger picture. They use ICT as a means to an end.

I met some very nice people i hope i will meet again. Most importantly, i won a Geeky Chix t-shirt ! Which is the very first thing i own that combines the attributes of ‘geeky’ and ‘cute’. Funny where life will take you sometimes.

Blog Action Day today

October 15th, 2007

morning dewAs announced, today is Blog Action Day – the theme is the environment.

I could start with climate control, go over the increasing power needs of India and China, and finish with the decreasing biodiversity of our planet. The kind of world-scale problem that just make you want to crawl back to bed.

So I’ll do personal scale. How to make a small difference without being a full-out eco-warrior with dreads and hemp robes:

  • take public transport when humanly possible. or walk. or bike
  • prefer train to plane when humanly possible
  • eat seasonal and local vegetable and fruits. Makes sense because they taste better as well (sorry, couldn’t find the tables in dutch or english). Bio-labeled.
  • use eco-friendly cleaning products
  • switch out light and desktop computer at night, or when I leave the room
  • sort the trash (hoping that the downstream processing will recycle as much as possible)
  • avoid products with a ridiculous amount of packaging
  • avoid furniture made of rare tropical woods
  • get myself on the waiting list for an ecological energy supplier
  • if i get rich i’ll buy solar panels, promise

Nothing new, really. Waiting for the scientific geniuses to come up with the ultimate solutions (cold fusion, cheap solar panels, waste transmutation, clean transportation), but in the meantime maybe those little bits will help. Hopefully.

Green Peace

October 12th, 2007

peace doveAl Gore is this year’s nobel prize winner. No joke.

My reaction was mostly disbelief. OK, the guy had the guts to broach a subject that wasn’t very popular with current US administration.

Don’t get me wrong, i think the environment is a worthy cause. But did he really contribute to world peace with his foundation ? More to the point, didn’t they notice that his wee film had more than a hint of self-promotion ?

This led me to the question: who has interest in his gain in popularity. It appears the Nobel prize is heavily sponsored.

For me, this is like finding out that Santa Claus doesn’t exist. I had the idealistic notion that the nobel prize for peace rewarded real peace heroes, like Doctors without borders, Nelson Mandela or Aung San Suu Kyi.

But as I could have guessed in 2005, they now seem to be mostly about promoting a political (and economic) agenda.

Blog Action Day

October 10th, 2007

blog action day logoI’m not into the whole mexican wave phenomenon called ‘buzz’. But Blog Action Day is for a good cause, and a no-brainer: the environment (through bnox).

Now i don’t know what the effect of a few thousand people spreading the word will be – since you have to be blind, deaf and stupid not to feel concerned already. But maybe it will show some internet-savvy politicians that we, the vocal ones on internet, do care.

(and then, before going to bed, you could switch off your desktop, as an added carbonprint bonus ;-) )

Moshi moshi

October 9th, 2007

japanMy parents are off to Japan for three weeks. Since we haven’t heard from them since they left (though no news is good news usually), i resolved to phone them this morning, at about 6pm Tokyo time.

I phoned the number they had given me for contact. A female voice answered with “moshi moshi”. I moshied her back, and then segued into “do you speak english ?” This was answered by a resolute “no”.

Slight panic. After a few stammering “gomen, gomen” (means “sorry”, and is about all the japanese i remember from the trip i took 13 years ago) i just hung up.

Slightly frustrated, i armed myself with a wee vocabulary. I waited for lunch. I rehearsed a few sentences until i didn’t stumble too much, and called the number again.

This time, i was greeted with a japanese answering machine. Sugoi. I gave up.

lawTwo months with ruby on rails: developer gives his opinion (via Simon Willison). I think most problems are due to the fact rails is still a young platform.

For instance, when i started i was told multiple and remote databases weren’t possible. This seemed weird for any platform. But it is no longer true, if it ever was.

On a different, note, found an interesting site today: free contracts (in french). You’ll notice the ‘internet’ part, which could be interesting for startups operating from Belgium.

I used to find law very boring. I still find it boring: no plot, no action, no strong characters, absence of plot twists. But i’ve come to see that it’s very useful to know about it – or to know someone who knows about it.

Security guide for rails. Quite comprehensive and (i hope) up-to-date.

wifi tricks. I particularly like the little tinfoil amplifiers, which gives a nice home-made touch to the neutral plastic box.

And a nice little comparison to see what large sites are working with. Just goes to show that just about anything is scaleable if you throw enough love and money at it. And that LAMP is still doing very well.

Wandering

October 7th, 2007

autumn leafYesterday afternoon i went out for an errand, and after that i just kept on walking. Just following my feet through the city for an hour or two.

I love clear autumn days: the air has a cristalline quality, with a cold edge that’s a Kelvin away from biting. The slanting light gives everything a warmer sheen.

May those golden days last for a little while – the alternative being grey soggy autumn days.

Railsconf presentations

October 6th, 2007

railsconf europe logoLast year i got a wee Ruby script to download all the presentations of Railsconf through Werner Ramaekers.

I couldn’t find it, so i whipped up a quick’n dirty one (using hpricot and open-uri) for this year’s Railsconf Europe in Berlin. You can use it if you want.

BRUG

October 4th, 2007

RubyWhere i was going last night ? To the brand new Belgian Ruby User Group.

This group is a good thing, because Ruby and Rails still need to be promoted in Belgium. It’s also good to know colleagues to discuss and compare views. Since i got lost i missed the meet’n greet, unfortunately, which is arguably the best bit.

It was organised by the people of XAOP, who also arranged for catering, drinks and a good presentation on metaprogramming (DSL).

Good stuff – i look forward to the next one. Inchallah i’ll be on time, this time.
Note: and where were the girls ? (apart from me) Got to ask around at the Girl Geek Dinner – i can’t be the only female in Belgium doing Ruby
