Depending on your computer's RAM and CPU specs, you could go for a lightweight distro (such as DSL, see http://damnsmalllinux.org/) or a full-fledged Ubuntu Gutsy (without the fancy 3d acceleration bling-bling off course) . I described the process of doing so with Ubuntu a few months ago on http://blog.futtta.be/2007/05/07/pinguin-vrijheid-op-je-dichtgetimmerde-bedrijfslaptop, (in Dutch). hope this helps.
